Isolating such patients will help them get access to specialists at the earliest, doctors said.
Additionally, in an advisory issued on Thursday, the health department advised children and senior citizens to stay indoors during early morning and evening hours unless it was absolutely necessary to step out.
The Civil Hospital in the city saw at least 90 cases of lung and upper respiratory problems every day this past week, officials said. Private hospitals, too, have been witnessing a surge in such cases.
“The decision was taken because we are expecting a rise in cases related to respiratory diseases in the coming months. We have asked all primary health centres to submit daily reports on such cases. A flu corner is already there at the civil hospital,” said Dr Virender Yadav, the chief medical officer.
Doctors said the rise in PM 2.5 levels was a cause for concern for people who are having breathing problems. “Such patients should avoid going out for evening and early morning walks. Children and people aged over 60 are more prone to getting infected under the current circumstances. Cases of pneumonia, influenza, asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases are likely to rise during the winters,” Yadav added.
The surge of vehicles on the road during the festive season not only leads to pollution but also makes people more susceptible to lung ailments, doctors said.
Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, head of critical care and pulmonology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon, said, “There’s a significant rise in patients with chest issues and COPD. More and more respiratory issues are being noticed and we are seeing around 30 to 35 patients per day in our OPD.”

Danaher reported better-than-expected profits for the third quarter, driven by strong demand for its diagnostic tests for respiratory diseases. The company's diagnostics unit, which includes COVID-19 testing kits, exceeded analyst estimates with sales of $2.25 billion. However, the life sciences unit, which provides reagents and lab equipment for drug discovery, fell short of expectations with sales of $1.71 billion. Despite the mixed results, Danaher expects a slight decline in adjusted core sales for the year. Rising interest rates and funding constraints have impacted demand for biopharma services in the industry.
Air pollution levels in Mumbai have reached unprecedented levels, causing a rise in patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. Doctors have noticed an increase in hospitalizations for long-term asthmatic patients, which is unusual due to the availability of advanced inhalers. The levels of particulate matter in the air, particularly PM2.5 and PM10, have been linked to the spike in patients. Mumbai's coastal location, which previously protected it from pollution, seems to be ineffective against rising construction dust and vehicular emissions. Doctors recommend using masks as protection against outdoor pollution and advise against outdoor activities during mornings when pollution levels are higher.
The poor air quality in Pune is negatively affecting those with respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Even those with good health are experiencing persistent dry coughs. People who frequently travel for work and are exposed to pollution are particularly at risk. The city's air quality index (AQI) is currently at a moderate level of 176, worse than Delhi's AQI of 89. Doctors are seeing an increase in patients seeking treatment for respiratory issues, including respiratory failure and exacerbation of COPD cases. Prolonged exposure to poor air quality can lead to severe symptoms and long-term health effects.
