Meanwhile, KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand said, “Now, patients suffering from serious respiratory disease COPD can also lead a normal life. By improving lifestyle and regulating eating habits one can protect oneself from dangers of COPD to a great extent.”
Prof Nityanand said smoking makes the condition worse. The patient starts losing weight rapidly. Headaches occur in the morning. Swelling may also occur in the feet. Bleeding along with cough is also a major symptom. “If symptoms are ignored, the patient may become vulnerable to pneumonia and other lung infections,” she added.

November 15th is COPD Day, with a focus on the theme "Life - Act Earlier." The theme emphasizes the importance of early attention to lung health, timely identification, and preventive actions. COPD is the third leading cause of death globally, with its prevalence increasing. COPD is manageable but incurable, and effective care helps alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. The severity of COPD affects life expectancy, with more severe cases having a greater risk of complications. COPD also has a significant impact on mental health, triggering anxiety and depression. Preventive measures, prioritizing medication and inhalers, exercise, and pulmonary rehabilitation can help protect lung health.
Long-term exposure to factors such as bursting firecrackers, air pollution, smoking, and construction activities can increase the incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a prevalent lung disease in India, characterized by airflow limitation and declining lung function. Symptoms include breathlessness, coughing, and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. Prompt intervention is crucial to effectively manage COPD and improve patients' quality of life. Awareness about the negative effects of firecracker pollution can encourage safer alternatives and eliminate their use. Medications, vaccination, and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are essential in COPD management. Education and symptom management are also important for COPD patients.
Lung cancer is not only prevalent among older individuals with a smoking history, but it can also develop in young adults and non-smokers. Causes of lung cancer in young adults include genetic predisposition, secondhand smoke exposure, and exposure to radon gas. Young adults with lung cancer face challenges such as delayed diagnosis, psychological impact, fertility issues, and financial strain. Preventive techniques include avoiding smoking, creating smoke-free environments, mitigating radon exposure, practicing occupational safety, being mindful of air quality, and early detection. Increasing awareness and reducing risks are crucial in managing lung cancer in young adults.
