Ahuja asked people to keep doors and window of the house closed to prevent cold drafts and said that it was very important to keep the body warm to increase immunity. For this, he recommended food rich in Vitamin C and warm liquids at regular intervals.
Dr Ahuja warned against lighting fire in a closed room in the winter saying that the carbon monoxide gas produced could be fatal. The health department has already issued instructions to senior medical officers of hospitals in the district to make necessary arrangements for treatment of patients suffering from cold.
The civil surgeon said that low body temperature could cause tremors in speech, sleepiness, muscle stiffness and difficulty in breathing. He said that people suffering from hypothermia should seek medical attention as soon as possible and warned against drinking alcohol. He said that alcohol reduces body temperature and increases the risk of hypothermia. In case of any problem, residents could contact the helpline number 104, he said. tnn
