RSV infections primarily circulate during the fall and winter seasons, coinciding with the flu season. Infections typically peak during January and February each year. For most adults, RSV manifests in the form of a mild cold or flu, but in high-risk groups, it can cause severe conditions like pneumonia and bronchiolitis. The virus remains contagious for the first three to eight days following infection and can survive on nonporous surfaces for between three and 30 hours. While urgent care centers can test for RSV, treatment usually focuses on addressing the symptoms rather than testing for a specific virus.

Preventive Measures and Vaccination

Basic hygiene practices like frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when unwell are effective preventive measures. The good news is that an RSV vaccine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This vaccine, which received FDA approval in May 2023, is recommended for infants, young children, pregnant individuals, and adults aged 60 years and older and is expected to be available from the fall of 2023.
