New Delhi: In a sad incident, a 12-year-old girl tragically passed away after suffering from an asthma attack at school. In March this year, Pearl Unu-Arubi stopped breathing for eight minutes and then spent 10 days in a hospital in a critical condition before passing away. The girl’s parents, upon looking back at that day, remembered how they had dropped off their daughter to school that morning with plans to pick her up later like usual. However, during the day, they received a call stating that their daughter had suffered a massive asthma attack.

After the incident, Pearl was taken to a hospital where she was kept in critical care for 10 days. In the next few days, her parents were also told that she would be brain dead soon. However, she eventually passed away. The girl was diagnosed with asthma when she was 6-years-old.

Asthma is a condition of the respiratory system which affects adults and children alike. It is characterised by inflammation of the air passages in the lungs that become narrow and tighten around the smaller airways. It is characterised by the following symptoms:

  2. Chest tightness
  3. Wheezing
  4. Cough

What is an asthma attack?

An asthma attack refers to sudden worsening of asthma symptoms caused by tightening of muscles in the airways. During the attack, lining of the airways become inflamed, swollen and might produce more mucus than normal.

What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?

The symptoms of an asthma attack are:

  1. Rapid breathing
  2. Non-stop cough
  3. Chest tightness
  4. Chest pressure
  5. Severe wheezing
  6. Pale, sweaty face
  7. Difficulty in talking
  8. Anxiety
  9. Panic
  10. Tightening of chest and neck muscles
