Post pandemic, reports of youngsters dying of heart attack or cardiac arrest during workouts in clubs, gyms, or sports have become common in Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat.
Recently, a 19-year-old boy in Rajkot died in the gym while exercising. This is not the first incident that has taken place in the city. In the wake of the Covid pandemic, in the last three years, many youngsters, including celebrities and those from well-to-do families, have died from heart issues.
A few high-end gyms in the city have consequently introduced a chest-worn smart heart-monitor (ECG – electrocardiogram) system which gives real-time updates during exercise.
One of them is Mission Health Group that runs both physiotherapy and gyms at multiple centres in Ahmedabad. They have installed this technology for all patrons.
Director of Mission Health Group, Dr Aalap Shah said, “Post pandemic, observing how many youngsters were falling prey to cardiac issues, we thought of installing this system, so that it can give us a real-time report of their heart condition during exercise.”
Dr Shah added, “The heart rate is just the beginning and only half of the story; we have to keep in mind that there are other parameters also which can detect heart issues early, and prevent progression of the heart disease in youngsters.”
According to fitness experts, the live ECG monitors and also records key cardiac signals of an individual’s heart rate, heart strain, heart rhythms, breathing rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and continuous ECG.
Mrunal Ved, founder of FitFormance that uses a live ECG monitor system, said, “50% of our clients, between the age group of 25 and 40 years, have been using this system we introduced a year ago.”
He added, “Post pandemic, many are worried about these fatal incidents and, as a safety measure, they have willingly opted for this service. It’s helping them to exercise without fear and it has also improved their performance in the gym and the rest of the day.”
According to Ved, the system shows live updates and zones which alerts trainers to ask the client to stop working out and monitor his heart condition. It also helps the trainers to push the client’s endurance, based on his real time ECG report.
Since the pandemic, members of almost all age groups have gained weight, but youths being more health or weight conscious started exercising without first thoroughly checking their health. Therefore, many are facing issues like breathlessness, tiredness and fatigue.
Commenting on the same, Fitness Expert, Ruju Desai told Mirror, “Post pandemic, we have seen many youngsters, in their 20s to 40s, including our clients, having common problems like breathlessness, tiredness and fatigue.”
She added, “Therefore, technology, like real time ECG monitoring, can help in tackling health issues. Exercising under an expert’s monitoring is a must, especially for those who are having underlying health issues.”
I used to wear a smartwatch, but it wasn’t giving me the accuracy that the ECG chest band gives. It has helped me do better exercise without fear and stay fresh the whole day
