Alberta Lung’s Walk to Breathe fundraiser runs from July 17 to Sept. 4 to help fund research and support those affected by lung disease.
The goal for the 2023 virtual event is to raise $100,000 to fund several Alberta Lung programs including a lung transplant recovery facility in Edmonton called Breathing Space which will be the first of its kind in Canada.
In Alberta, lung transplants are performed at the University of Alberta Hospital’s transplant centre, but 77 per cent of Albertans live outside the Edmonton region so some patients face the cost of moving to Edmonton for surgery and recovery.
Since 2020, Walk to Breathe has raised over $100,000 for Breathing Space.
Alberta Lung says 20 per cent of Alberta’s population live with the challenges of lung and respiratory disease, 85,000 children under age 14 have asthma, and every 15 minutes an Albertan enters an emergency department due to an asthma attack.
People can join the challenge at any time over the next few weeks, and participants are encouraged walk, run, bike, hike, golf, stretch, dance, climb stairs, do yoga or other activities that are suitable for them.
Participants of all ages, fitness levels, and methods of mobility are welcome. Registration is free at the 2023 Alberta Lung Walk to Breathe Move Challenge on Facebook.
Other programs funded by Walk to Breathe include: Breathe Smart! Education Program; Pediatric CPAP Program; Radon Awareness Program; AeroChamber Program, and more.
Alberta Lung is a non-profit charity that raises money to increase awareness and understanding of lung disease, fund research to find a cure or a new treatment for lung diseases like asthma, lung cancer and COPD.
