HealTree will present Breathwork for Overall Well-being, facilitated by Catrina Stiller, at 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 20, at 1632 Savannah Road, Suite 9, Lewes.
Breathwork creates conscious awareness of one’s breath. There are many different types of breath techniques, and all types offer improved mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Breathwork helps regulate the nervous system. When practicing breathwork, an individual can increase self-awareness and patience; reduce stress, anxiety and grief; release trauma and fear stuck in the body; increase energy levels; and reduce physical pain.
Breathing techniques work by regulating the nervous system, refocusing attention and modifying brain circuits. When people feel happy or contented, their breathing slows and deepens. When they feel scared or nervous, their breath speeds up and becomes shallower. The breath pattern sends a signal to the brain. When someone focuses on their breath, they can change the pattern and thereby change the signals the brain is receiving. Practicing breathing techniques also focuses one’s attention, redirecting it from the object, person or thought that may be causing discomfort. Regular practice of breathwork modifies the circuits in the brain, increasing resilience to current and future life stressors.
In this workshop, participants will learn about breathwork and practice four different breathing techniques: 4x4 box breathing, humming bee breath, 4-7-8 breathing and energizing breath. These breaths may be used to calm, regulate or energize; they can aid in relieving stress, anxiety and depression.
By practicing these techniques in a gentle, calm, and supportive environment, participants can add another tool to their toolbox to be used when they need it.
Stiller, the workshop facilitator, is the executive director of HealTree and a licensed professional counselor of mental health in Delaware. She holds a certification from the National Board of Certified Counselors, a Reiki II certification and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention Certification, and she has completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training. She loves to provide people with tools they can use to move from surviving to thriving.
