The app features hundreds of calming exercises, helpful breathing techniques, and sleep stories narrated by celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and LeBron James.

Calm has many offerings, and the interface is relatively simple to navigate through. Plus, they’re constantly adding new content.

Many Healthline editors have tried (and loved) Calm. Here’s what they have to say.

Alina Sharon, an editor at Healthline, has been using the Calm app for a few months and says her favorite aspect is the sleep stories.

“I especially like the ones for kids,” she says. “I use [it] with my son all the time.”

However, she does find the app a little difficult to use since there’s so much content and it can sometimes feel unorganized.

Carrie Byrd, an associate editor at Healthline, says she enjoys using the Calm app to play music or soundscapes in the background while she works or relaxes. She also loves the breathing exercises, but notes that sometimes the background sounds can be distracting.

“It would be nice to have the option of feeling a light vibration when it’s time to switch your breath as well,” she says.

“My two dachshunds are significantly calmer and more well behaved when I work due to the soothing background noise,” she says.

Melissa Lee, a market wellness editor at Healthline, says her favorite feature (and one of her favorite ways to start the day) is the Daily Calm meditation.

“Every day, there’s a new 10-minute meditation on a certain subject matter (i.e., setting intentions, compassion). The first half has you breathe and relax, while the second half consists of a guided meditation on whatever the topic is,” she says.

Calm has the option for users to access either a 7-day free trial or the free version of the app without paying for premium contact. Calm is built on a “freemium” model. Without purchase, you get access to:

After the free trial ends, access to the full library is $14.99 per month or $69.99 per year. If you pay for the year in full, it comes out to $5.83 per month, which is more affordable than other meditation apps on the market.

For teams of 5 or more, Calm offers a 15% discount. And Calm family plans are also available for up to six users at $99.99 a year.

Students can get discounted access to Calm through Amazon Prime Student. This includes a three-month free trial of the premium service and then a discounted yearly subscription fee of $8.99 a year.

Calm also offers a lifetime membership for $399.99.

As soon as you open it, the app welcomes you to take a few deep breaths. Then, a pop-up menu asks you to select what brought you to the app so that it can tailor recommendations based on your goals.

The meditation section is organized into different categories, like stress, focus, anxiety, and relationships. Calm offers both guided and unguided meditations. The sessions can range anywhere from 3 to 30 minutes.

The music section of Calm contains hundreds of curated soundtracks to put you at ease while working, walking, or falling asleep. The app has everything organized into six categories: focus, lullabies, relax, sleep, soundscapes, and nature melodies.

Calm also plays background music as you scroll through the app or start a session. It’s customizable, so you can choose between a calming aquascape, rain on a window, a campfire, and more. You’re able to easily adjust the sound level.

Calm Masterclass

Calm’s Masterclasses are short courses taught by mindfulness experts and esteemed professionals, like Shawn Achor, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Ryan Holiday.

Masterclasses focus on a wide array of topics, like breaking bad habits, embracing stillness, conscious parenting, and discovering happiness. Each Masterclass comes with a free introductory video, but only paying subscribers have access to entire courses.

Calm Kids

If you’re looking to decide between the two apps, you may want to consider that Calm:

  • may be better for those who have some meditation experience
  • has lengthier guided meditations and stories
  • offers less structured meditation sessions

The app has a 4.8 out of 5-star rating on the App Store. Many people express feelings of satisfaction with the app’s functionality, noting that new content is constantly being released.

App users say that the sleep stories are one of the most helpful features, especially for those who have difficulty falling asleep. Many reviewers say that they would fall asleep before the story finishes, usually within 5 to 10 minutes.

Others say that the mood check-in is a soothing way of helping them express and release any overwhelming thoughts and feelings. It also helps them enjoy positive feelings and reflect upon their mood.

Although the Calm app may help improve insomnia or lessen feelings of anxiety or depression, it can’t substitute going to see a mental health professional.

You should consider going to see a doctor if you’re:

  • experiencing a big life change, like grieving or family and relationship issues
  • engaging in unhealthy life habits or addictions such as smoking, drinking, or drug use
  • experiencing symptoms of a phobia
