Action Days are when the AQI, or air quality index, reaches the unhealthy range. Certain pollutants may pose a moderate health concern for individuals who may have respiratory problems. The alert is in effect until noon Friday.

Currently, the particular matter index is at 2.5, which can threaten the health of those with breathing issues. Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy range for sensitive groups with some hourly concentrations reaching the unhealthy level for all residents, according to the National Weather Service.

The action day is in effect for Huron, Tuscola, Bay, and Sanilac counties in mid-Michigan. Health experts recommended that active children and adults, along with others with respiratory diseases such as asthma, limit their time outdoors.

Recent wildfires in Canada have affected air quality throughout the state and much of the eastern U.S.
