The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a severe pediatric Covid-19 case as a 4-year-old boy was admitted to the intensive care unit after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia.

The boy has been to Australia during the incubation period and developed fever, cough with sputum, and tiredness last Friday (Dec 29).

He tested positive for Covid on Monday after returning to Hong Kong, CHP said. He presented with shortness of breath the next day and was brought to a private doctor and the accident and emergency department of Tuen Mun Hospital for medical attention.

The Centre said the boy's respiratory specimen tested positive for the Covid virus upon laboratory testing. He is now in serious condition.

The boy had not received a Covid vaccine and his three relatives had presented with symptoms.

CHP reminded the community to heighten vigilance against respiratory tract infection in winter and urged high-risk individuals to get vaccinated as soon as possible and receive booster doses at appropriate times.
