The study indicates that transitioning from polluting fuels to gaseous fuels for household purposes can reduce health risks. This finding is particularly relevant for low-income countries, where the impact could be most pronounced. The study explored the health impacts of gaseous and liquid fuels, excluding polluting liquid fuels for lighting, and highlighted the potential respiratory effects of gas usage. The results underline that gaseous fuels are associated with a significantly lower risk of key health outcomes, contributing to a reduction in the global disease burden from pollution.

The Study: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
The research synthesized evidence on the health effects of domestic use of liquid and gaseous fuels, emphasizing the urgent need for a clean transition to meet Sustainable Development Goals. This comprehensive study included 216 studies in the systematic review and 116 studies in the meta-analysis, focusing on the health effects of cooking and heating with liquid and gaseous fuels. Gaseous fuels demonstrated a lower risk of asthma in adults, a lower risk of acute lower respiratory infections, chronic lung diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and other respiratory symptoms compared to polluting fuels.
Health Gains from Switching to Clean Fuels
According to the latest research completed by the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on CLEAN-Air(Africa), switching from polluting fuels such as charcoal to gas brings significant health gains. The study shows that using clean gas for cooking or heating can lower the risk of death and a range of health conditions. The partnership of public health experts from academic, research, and clinical institutions from multiple countries, encourages clean cooking for households and schools. In Kenya, CLEAN-Air Africa has trained 2,500 instructors across all 47 counties to reach the entire population.
Impacts of Transitioning to Clean Fuels in African Homes
Researchers at the University of Liverpool conducted a comprehensive analysis of the health benefits of transitioning African homes from polluting fuels to clean fuels such as bottled gas. The study found that pollution from burning solid fuels and kerosene is responsible for more than 680,000 premature deaths each year in sub-Saharan Africa.
