During Tuesday’s instalment, the former Countdown host and Olympian Fatima Whitbread teamed up to win stars for camp and put dinner on the table.
While the 62-year-old TV personality was initially raring to go and bring home the bacon, when she and Fatima, also 62, began, she realised just how difficult it was.
Carol had to hold her breath while going underwater in several tanks in order to get the stars, facing creatures such as crocodiles and snakes, while turning to a small breathing hole for air when she needed it.
Explaining that drowning was her biggest phobia, she started to panic at one point as Fatima – who wasn’t inside the underwater tanks – reassured her: ‘Let it settle, you’re fine. You can do it, just calm yourself.’
After viewers saw the emotional scenes, Carol explained just how much the challenge affected her.
She penned: ‘Thank u for your amazing messages about @imacelebrity tonight. I had the first panic attack of my life but pushed as much as I was able. The snake in the final breathing hole was a tank too far/
‘Ps I do chats every night on insta live after the show if u fancy joining?’
While speaking to co-hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, Carol explained the root of her terror.
‘I’m sorry I might even cry. My one real fear is drowning. I could see there was a snake in the breathing hole,’ she shared, while Fatima told her that she ‘conquered’ her fear.
‘It’s the only time I’ve been like this about a phobia in my life,’ she added.
Elsewhere during last night’s show, former boxer Amir Khan was the first celeb eliminated by the camp.
‘This has been the craziest week I’ve ever had,’ Amir said before the vote took place cementing his exit.
The next morning, he admitted that the mood in camp ‘wasn’t the best’ at the prospect of someone leaving the group.
When he found out that he had been sent home, Amir was overjoyed with excitement at the prospect of FaceTiming his kids, who he said he’d been missing a lot.
I’m A Celebrity… South Africa returns tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
