Fall outside

Fall can be seen as a time of reset. From changes in our breathing and sleeping habits, to the way we take care of ourselves.

This is also a good time to try something new. And that doesn’t just mean the latest pumpkin spice latte. But, that will be part of the equation!

The seven pillars are a good place to start when it comes to putting together a fitness routine. They are mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational and social.

It is important that you make each pillar your own and try as many pillars as you can for your overall well-being. Many of these are naturally involving.

OSF HealthCare psychotherapist Sara Bennett says quieting your mind is a great way to improve mental health.

“It’s great when things slow down and you can just cuddle up in front of the fire with a blanket and some hot chocolate,” Bennett said. “Enjoy the slowness. Quieting your mind is an excellent aspect of self-care. “

Bennett says getting outside for a hike with friends helps with the recreational, environmental and physical pillars. While volunteering in your community can improve your social and spiritual health.

The cooler fall breezes blowing through the Midwest may be a welcome sight for some, but for those with severe respiratory ailments, it can be a challenging season.

Dr. Juanbosco Ayala, a pulmonologist at OSF HealthCare, says getting the flu vaccine is a good way to protect yourself.

He said that you should monitor your breathing habits and if they change in colder weather.

“Especially people with asthma or patients with emphysema or COPD, we notice some of their symptoms that may precede this change in weather. Things like cough, shortness of breath and crying are common symptoms that can occur during this time,” said Dr. Ayala.

In addition to Dr. If you have a constant cough that won’t go away, or fever, chills and night sweats, it’s important to see your doctor right away.

For those who like to sleep with the windows open in the fall, Dr. Ayala says it’s fine.
