New Delhi: Pirola, a highly mutated variant of Covid is now wreaking havoc in parts of the world. And to combat it, a new vaccination drive is being brought forward to curb the same. So far, the new strain BA.2.86 has not contributed to an uptick in cases – and doctors say that the best way to test for it is to perform a lateral flow test. Doctors are also finding signs that the disease is changing and fresh Covid symptoms now appear on the face of patients.
What are the symptoms of Covid?
The Covid pandemic kicked off in early 2020 and some of its common telltale symptoms are:
- Loss of taste and smell
- Shortness of breath
- Fever that would not go away
- Hacking cough
- Weakness
Turns out, these symptoms have now become rather uncommon. But when it comes to the face, some of the most visible Covid symptoms are skin rashes and pink eye. Doctors say that the Pirola variant is affecting the upper respiratory tract including the voice box and the nose. This can be slightly similar to what patients have complained of before such as:
- Mild sore throat
- Congestion
- Sneezing
There are also some uncommon symptoms of Covid, such as:
- Red, purple bumps on the toes and fingers
- Diarrhoea
- Digestive distress
- Confusion
The Zoe Covid Symptom Study gathered inputs on self-reported symptoms and discovered the same pattern in patients. It discovered that a sore throat became a common cause of concern after the Omicron variant of Covid dominated in late 2021. Loss of smell and taste, on the other hand, were well reported.

- Sore throat
- Sneezing
