Busta Rhymes Explains How Struggling To Breathe During Sex Partially Inspired His Weight-loss Journey: ‘I Felt Like I Was Having An Asthma Attack’

Hip-hop star Busta Rhymes is getting candid about his health transformation.

The rap legend opened up about situations that occurred prior to his 100-pound weight loss that prompted him to take his health seriously.

During a recent cover interview, Busta Rhymes, real name Trevor Smith Jr., was transparent in sharing how his son and ex-girlfriend intentionally and unintentionally encouraged him to lose some weight. The first interaction with his unnamed former partner reportedly happened while the two were being intimate in the bedroom. Rhymes shared:

“I was getting ready to have an intimate moment with my ex…I was having a really difficult time breathing, so I got up and I walked out of the bedroom so she wouldn’t panic seeing me trying to keep myself calm.”

He continued:

“I was trying to inhale, and it felt like it wasn’t working. I felt like I was having like an asthma attack—but I don’t have asthma. So I walked out of the bedroom and went into the living room, and I was forcing myself to inhale, to relax. That was scaring me so much that it was a mindf**k, because I had to stay calm and make sure she didn’t hear me panic or hear me struggle to breathe.”

The “Touch It” artist went on to share that despite trying to shield his ex from what was going on, she could tell something was up and quickly spoke out about it. After returning to the room, Rhymes said the woman was very real with him about the change she’d seen in his body and health since they first began dating. He continued in the interview:

“I laid back down next to her…She was like, ‘Yo, this is not who I fell in love with.’ She didn’t know what had happened outside, but she was looking at my body and the weight. She was like, ‘You gotta lose this weight. This breathing is scaring me. When I met you, you wasn’t like a musclehead, but you, you was slim, you was cut, you had your sh*t right. I need you to get back to who I fell in love with.'”

Earlier in the conversation, Rhymes opened up about how the death of his father in 2014 sent him in a downward spiral that resulted in his weight jumping to around 340 pounds. The musician revealed that a combination of excessive drinking and smoking plus poor eating habits had him in the worse shape of his life, which continued for years.

In 2019, the rapper said that his physical and mental health was so bad that he embarrassingly passed out drunk while out with his eldest son and friends. According to the entertainer, it took his child and security nearly 45 minutes to get him in the house. Though he recognized his need for change, his fear of his growing health ailments and the possible end of his career caused him to still hesitate to get the help he needed.

However, shortly after the situation with his ex, Rhymes said a not-so-funny joke his son played on him forced him to come to terms with his need to lose some weight.

 He shared:

“A day or two later, I came out of the bedroom. I put my hand out to give my son a pound, and this n—-a slapped me on the stomach. I was like, ‘Man, don’t touch my body. If I reach you to give you a handshake, don’t touch my body or touch my side or my stomach.’ He was just being funny, but these things never happened when I had a six-pack.”

“I was also scared about surgery for the polyps on my vocal cords because my voice is how I feed my family—the voice is the dragon. I ran from the surgery as long as I could, but after that weekend I saw the doctor and he looked at my throat and he said I could die in my sleep. That’s when I got surgery and started to get back in shape.”

Since then, Rhymes has lost over 100 pounds and seems to be in much better shape mentally and physically. The rapper shared he’s now in a phase of shaping up his body more for his current tour headed by fellow rapper 50 Cent. He added that he refuses to be the “weak link.”
