Education Minister Jan Tinetti says three years of COVID-19 disruptions have left teachers and students exhausted, so it’s time to ease the workload a bit and focus on what matters to families most.
Teacher unions have said delaying the changes means teachers can focus on kids’ outcomes.
Schools have been coping with significant disruption and want a sense of normalcy.
The new NCEA Level 1 will be fully implemented in 2024 as planned but Level 2 will now be implemented in 2026 and Level 3 in 2027.
It won’t affect the roll out of Aotearoa New Zealand Histories and Te Takanga o Te Wā, which are already required.
