ROANOKE, Va. – On Monday, a federal judge halted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s extended mask mandate.

Many travelers are breathing a sigh of relief without masks, but it will take some getting adjustment for others.

“I think they should have an option,” said Karah Loisne.

“I am a registered nurse, so I feel an obligation to wear one to protect my patients when I’m traveling,” said Caroline Gerdes. “I think they should have the option.”

“I don’t think they’re thinking this through for everybody and the safety of the public,” said Roanoke cab owner Shantel Cooke.

These local transportation sites no longer require masks:

  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport

  • Valley Metro

  • Danville Mass Transit

  • Greater Lynchburg Transit

Uber is also no longer requiring masks during rides.

In an emailed statement, Amtrak said:

“While Amtrak passengers and employees are no longer required to wear masks while on board trains or in stations, masks are welcome and remain an important preventive measure against COVID-19. Anyone needing or choosing to wear one is encouraged to do so.”
