@dr.karanr Is this the fastest stre$$ hack? #schoolwithdrkaran #mentalhealth #breathing ♬ Cornfield Chase – Hans Zimmer

If you suffer from stress or anxiety, you might want to try out this quick and easy hack. Dr. Karanr on TikTok claims that this is the fastest way to reduce unwanted feelings of stress and anxiety, and it’s based on science. This trick is known in the science community as the physiological sigh, and it is a pattern of breathing in which two inhales through the nose is followed by an extended exhale through the mouth. Dr. Karanr explains that your body does this several times a day, oftentimes without you even noticing.

The physiological sigh helps your body regulate high CO2 levels and stress. It will allow you to bring your level of autonomic nervous system arousal back to baseline. You have little sacks of air in the lungs, which increase the volume of air that you can bring in. The double inhales of the physiological sigh “pop” the air sacks (called alveoli) open, allowing oxygen in and enabling you to offload carbon dioxide in the long exhaled sigh out, says Stanford neurobiologist Andrew Huberman.

The great thing about this hack is that you can do it anywhere at any time. Try out this hack if you’re suddenly feeling stressed or anxious when you’re out and about, and see if it works for you!
