Whether it’s caused by work, relationships or just life in general, it’s pretty common for us to talk about being stressed out by one thing or another. For a lot of us, this has become a bit of a catch-all meaning we’re busy or frustrated about something, but constant or excessive stress can lead to serious problems if left unchecked.

Life coach and podcaster James Sweetman knows a thing or two about coping with stress, so when he joined Keith Walsh on a recent episode of I’ll Start Monday he had plenty of advice to offer in terms of recognising the causes of stress and minimising its impact on our lives.

James describes stress as “trying to control the uncontrollable”, so we should focus more on what we can actually control – which could be something as simple as our breathing. He also offers some breathing exercises which can help us feel more in control of a situation.

Looking at some of the causes of stress, he says, “The stressor is, ‘I’m afraid that other people will judge me negatively’

“But if we pick that apart a bit, if I think other people are judging me negatively – I’m the one who’s doing negative judgement.”

James offers plenty of great advice, tips and techniques – listen to the full episode below for more:
