In today’s world, mental health is just as important as physical health. It refers to our overall well-being, which includes emotional, psychological, and social aspects. Our mental health affects the way we think, feel, and behave as we navigate through life. Taking care of our mental health is essential for our overall wellness. Here are seven self-care tips that can help promote good mental health.

1. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the fundamental human capability to be completely present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, and not overreactive or overwhelmed by whatever is going on around us. Practice or develop mindfulness as it can impact our mental health significantly.

Tips to develop this practice:

  • Mindful breathing
  • Meditation
  • Mindful walking
  • Gratefulness

2. Spend Time With Nature

The American Psychological Association (APA) links spending time in nature with lower stress levels, improved cognition, positive affect, and subjective well-being. Being in nature promotes and encourages physical activity, which plays a substantial role in our overall well-being. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), regular physical activity can lower our blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, as well as improve circulation and strengthen the heart.

3. Be Physically Active

People who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional well-being. It boosts concentration and alertness. Exercise causes your brain to release ‘feel good’ chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin that assist in improving our mood. It also enhances the overall physical health.

4. Take Time to Just Relax

Stepping away from something stressful for a few minutes or taking some time away from your normal routines and thoughts can give you enough space and distance to feel calmer. Read a book or a magazine, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Take a bath, watch a film, play with a pet, or try out a new recipe to feel at peace or relax.

5. Communicate with Others

Our communication skills are more important than ever; they help us clearly express ourselves and stay connected in positive ways. Good mental health is supported by effective communication. When we can articulate ourselves, and listen to others, it’s easier to understand and be there for each other.

6. Eat Healthy Food

Eating nutritious and balanced meals can give you the energy and nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. A lot of people who struggle with mental health lack vitamin D, vitamin B, and omega-3 fatty acids. Make sure that you are incorporating these into your diet.

7. Get Enough Sleep or Rest

Aim to sleep for at least 7-8 hours every day. When we don’t get enough rest, our minds and bodies can become over-stressed and exhausted, leading to poor mental health. Therefore, for good mental health, get enough sleep.
