A schoolgirl was inspired by her asthmatic mother to design a prizewinning backpack that filters the air.

Eleanor Woods, 12, from Huddersfield, entered the Backpack To The Future competition after her mother put the application form in her room. “I have an air filter at home because my mum has mild asthma,” she said.

The backpack is powered by solar electricity and a dynamo has a filter and fans to clean polluted air.

“My Breathe Better Backpack is all about keeping my friends, family and classmates safe using an air filter.

“It looks cool, will help get kids outside and fights off colds,” she said while holding her original design.
