If you’re a UI Health Care employee experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness, such as a cough, fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, etc., there are resources available to help you determine your next steps.

If you experience any symptoms of a respiratory virus (see symptoms below), you can use the MyChart Self-Checker to determine next steps, including scheduling a COVID-19 or flu test. Just answer a short set of questions to determine a testing time and location that works for you.

You’ll need to create a MyChart account—if you don’t already have one—to use this tool. Read more about signing up for a free MyChart account.

Once in MyChart, you’ll be prompted to select your reason for using the self-checker.

After selecting “Experiencing symptoms,” you’ll see the available testing locations. Testing is generally available at UI Quick Care and UI Urgent Care locations.

If you do test positive for COVID-19, follow the steps outlined on our HR & Employee Health page.

You do not need to notify the University Employee Health Clinic if you test positive for COVID-19 or the flu.

What else can the MyChart Self-Checker be used for?

Employees can also use the MyChart Self-Checker if they:

  • Have concerns or questions about the COVID-19 vaccine
  • Tested positive for COVID-19
  • Have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19
  • Need general advice related to COVID-19

Symptoms may include:

  • Fever of 100.0 F or greater
  • New/worsening sore throat
  • New/worsening cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • New/worsening congestion
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste and/or smell
  • New/worsening GI symptoms

What to know about home tests

Home tests may also be used to test for COVID-19, though these tests do not detect the flu.

In general, at-home antigen tests do well at detecting COVID-19 infection, although they may be more likely to provide false negatives. If you have symptoms and test negative on an at-home test, you may want to receive a PCR test—which is considered more accurate—and wear a mask until your symptoms go away. You can receive a PCR test at a UI Quick Care or UI Urgent Care by following the MyChart Self-Checker steps as outlined above.

Home tests are available for purchase in the Discharge and UI Health Care-IRL pharmacies.
