CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded the death of a 42-year-old due to Covid-19 on Friday, and reported 38 new cases of the infection. With the discharge of 39 patients, the number of active cases came down to 188 from 190 on Thursday.
A 42-year-old man with bipolar affective disorder and uncontrolled diabetes was admitted to Hindu Mission Hospital in Tambaram with complaints of fever, cough and breathing difficulty.
He tested positive for Covid-19 and was later referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital with oxygen support on December 31. Despite intensive care, the man died on January 4 due to Covid pneumonia, doctors said.
Samples were taken from 667 people for RTPCR test. By the end of the day, Chennai had 99 active cases followed by 23 in Chengalpet, 13 in Coimbatore and 12 active in Kancheepuram.

Goa registered five Covid cases, taking the active tally to 57. Three patients opted for home isolation, while two were admitted to health facilities. Ahmedabad recorded 21 new Covid cases, the highest in December. The cases include 15 men and six women from various areas. Eight of them had traveled to Canada, US, Mumbai, and Kerala. Eleven patients were discharged and one patient remained in the hospital. Gujarat has 79 active cases, which is the seventh highest among Indian states.
29 new Covid cases in TN, active cases drop to 178
29 new covid cases were added to the state Covid-19 registry, bringing the total to 178 active cases. There were no deaths reported. Chennai had 14 new cases, followed by Chengalpet with 6, and Kancheepuram and Salem with 3 each. The state conducted 304 RTPCR tests, with a test positivity rate of 1.6%. Chennai has the highest number of active cases, followed by Chengalpet, Coimbatore, and Kancheepuram. Health Minister Ma Subramanian advised people to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Omicron and its sub-variants cause relatively mild illnesses with most people recovering in three days.
