BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several fire departments around New England received calls reporting a strong smoky odor and hazy sky on Tuesday. New Englanders can thank Canadian wildfires for that.
Sharon Fire Department, Medfield Fire Department, and several others in Massachusetts let residents know that the smoke we can see and smell is actually coming from wildfires in Canada.
The smoke from several wildfires in Nova Scotia, Canada is being pushed by the wind blowing out of the Northeast.
The National Weather Service said the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has an air quality alert in place for most of the region that is set to end Tuesday at midnight, as the air is not safe for some people with difficulty breathing.
"A lot of people may not notice it but people that do have asthma, breathing issues, certainly just a little bit of smoke can cause some problems," Feerick said.
The smoke should start to clear up around the middle of the week.
