The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reported that 70 million Americans battle with sleep disorders on an ongoing basis. Many studies have shown that a lack of sleep can lead to both physical and mental health issues. However, a new trend called moon breathing has gone viral on TikTok and could be the answer to your sleepless nights. The technique, which stems from the Japanese concept of kaizen, meaning to change for the better, involves regulating your breathing pattern. Sarah Harvey explained how in her book, 'Kaizen: The Japanese Method for Transforming Habits, One Small Step at a Time.' "If you place your finger below each nostril and take turns exhaling, you will notice a stronger burst of air emerge from one nostril. These are your nadis that flow stronger or weaker depending on the time of day," Harvey told Vogue India. Harvey explained, “your left side is more feminine and asks for rest and creativity,” while the right is “masculine and invokes steadiness & well-being." The trick is to block your right nostril & take slow, deep breaths through the left, which “helps soothe your nerves & balance energies in your body."
