The Queensland Police Service (QPS) was host to a national Home-Made Explosives Course on behalf of the Australian New Zealand Counter Terrorism Committee (ANZCTC).
The seven-day course brought together 14 police bomb technicians from across Australia at the Service’s world class training facility the Bob Atkinson Operational Capabilities Centre (BAOCC) at Wacol.
With an increase in the prevalence of Home-Made Explosives (HME) in recent years, the course ensures national consistency and interoperability between jurisdictions, and complements the training already provided to bomb technicians in their own states.
The ANZCTC HME course comprises a mixture of theory, practical activities, and scenario training exercises which culminate in a large-scale interagency counter-terrorism response exercise.
Bomb technicians frequently interoperate with chemists, forensic and scientific officers from other government departments in responding to incidents involving HME, and the final exercise involved working alongside such officers from their own states.
Acting Superintendent Ringuet of the Specialist Response Group said it was an honour to be selected by ANZCTC to host the nationally recognised training course.
“It is tremendous for the QPS to be invited to host a course at this level and a great opportunity for us to use BAOCC to enhance the course by using a modern first-class training facility,” Acting Superintendent Ringuet said.
“Not only does the ANZCTC ensure national consistency and interoperability, but it also strengthens our existing QPS Bomb Technician training and allows us to practice the interagency partnerships that are the cornerstone of the Counter-Terrorism Plan.
“Training with our partner agencies strengthens our capability to prevent, disrupt, respond and investigate crime and deliver safe and secure communities.”
The ANZCTC-approved curriculum is being delivered by HME experts from a number of states, led by the QPS’ Sergeant Craig Coutts.
