Kolkata: Gyms and fitness centres in Kolkata have become busier with the onset of 2024 as Kolkatans are rushing to execute their resolutions of getting fitter, shedding holiday weight or gaining muscles.
Gyms in Kolkata usually witness a surge in new memberships at the start of every year. Several online surveys have found that physical health, mental health and financial health top the new year’s resolution chart, followed by goals about careers, relationships and other achievements.
“Our membership has increased by almost 20% in the past four days. And people are still joining. This sort of a surge within such a short period happens only during the onset of a new year,” said Kishore Jhawar, owner of The Fit Space in Girish Park.
The fitness industry banks on this and ramps up promotions, offering discounts, to attract more people. Most gyms make it mandatory for the members to pay for the entire year, or at least for six months, to get a good discount. “We started offering a discount of 15% before Christmas and the response had been very good,” said Mohammad Faisal Hussain, head trainer of Planet Fitness in Beckbagan.
Fitness trainers also said that almost 60% of those who join during this period stop coming to the gym after four to six weeks due to “other priorities”. The owner of a gym in central Kolkata said that the best members were those who don’t show up after working out for a few weeks. “The enthusiasm fizzles out within four to six weeks and people start becoming irregular. Since we have already taken a big part of the subscription, fewer members showing up means the more serious ones can work out in peace and comfort,” said a gym owner.
Yoga training centres, too, have seen a spurt in memberships. Interestingly, yoga centres don’t see such sharp drop-outs. “People do tend to get irregular, but most don’t drop out altogether. They come two or three days a week, which is better than not coming at all,” said Anirban Ghosh, a trainer at Mahabodhi Society of India on College Street.
