An inmate died at the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar Avenue Monday morning, prompting an investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

According to John Morris, a public information officer with SCSO, the inmate was brought to the jail's medical facility by corrections officers after he had difficulty breathing around 5:45 a.m. Monday.

The male inmate, whose name was not released by the sheriff's office, was eventually taken to Methodist University Hospital by the Memphis Fire Department.

Several hours later, SCSO said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

SCSO, which oversees the jail, is investigating the death.

This is at least the second death at the Shelby County Jail in 2023, with an earlier death taking place in early February.
