Ayurveda uses a range of herbs known for their beneficial properties in promoting eye health and managing cataracts. Two notable herbs are:

1. Triphala: Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu, Director, Jagat Pharma and Dr. Basu Eye Hospital says, “Triphala is a combination of three fruits - Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry), Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. It supports eye health, reduces inflammation, and protects against oxidative damage. It can be consumed internally or used as an eyewash to ease cataract symptoms.”

2. Yashtimadhu (Licorice root): Yashtimadhu possesses anti-inflammatory properties and is highly effective in reducing inflammation of the eyes. It helps prevent damage caused by free radicals, which can contribute to the development and progression of cataracts.

“Other Ayurvedic herbs beneficial for managing eye health include Ashwagandha, Ghee (clarified butter), Honey, Turmeric, Fennel (Saunf/Madhurika), Coriander, and Saffron. These herbs offer properties that improve eye health, reduce inflammation, protect against oxidative damage, and provide eye nourishment,” says Dr. Basu.
