This medicine contains the active ingredient cefuroxime which belongs to a group of medicines called cephalosporins antibiotics. Antibiotics are widely used for the treatment of bacterial infections by killing bacteria. This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of the urinary tract, ear, nose, throat, sinus, skin, chest and lungs. It can also be used in treatment of an early form of Lyme disease.

Is Cefuroxime suitable for me?

Cefuroxime is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to cefuroxime or to other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to penicillins, monobactams and carbapenems

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding 
  • have kidney problems

Cefuroxime interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Cefuroxime?

This medicine is available in form of a film-coated tablet.

You should take cefuroxime exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The doctor will prescribe the dose according to your needs.

  • The usual dose for adults is 250 mg to 500 mg twice a day.
  • The usual dose for children is 10 mg/kg (to a maximum of 125 mg) to 15 mg/kg (to a maximum of 250 mg) twice a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Cefuroxime side effects?

Like all medicines cefuroxime can cause side effects, including:

  • fungal infections
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • diarrhea
  • nausea 
  • stomach pain
  • vomiting
  • skin rashes
