Paris-born Bardot, an animal rights activist, now runs an animal sanctuary in St Tropez, having quit the film industry in 1973.

She shot to fame in the 1956 film And God Created Woman, but has since become a controversial figure, having been previously convicted over comments about Muslims.

Bardot has been married to d’Ormale, a far-right political aide, since 1992.

Like much of southern Europe, their home in the French Riviera resort has experienced higher than usual temperatures.

Highs of 48C are expected on the Continent, with record temperatures recorded in various parts of Italy and Spain.

The blazing heat has triggered wildfires in Greece, Switzerland and Malta.
