There were no deaths reported in the Northland on Thursday. The region logged seven COVID-19 related deaths between May 14-20, with Itasca and St. Louis counties each recording two, and Carlton, Lake and Douglas counties each recording one.

At the state level, Minnesota reported 874 new positive cases and eight deaths. Wisconsin reported 448 new cases and two deaths.

St. Louis County

Of the 392 new cases in the Northland this week, 163 were in St. Louis County.

New cases in St. Louis County cities April 30-May 6:

  • Duluth — 93.
  • Hibbing, Virginia — 12 each.

All other communities in the county logged fewer than 10 new cases in the last week.

As of Thursday, the county's seven-day testing positivity rate was 2.8%, the same as last week. The county logged more than 5,800 COVID-19 tests between May 14-20.

Carlton County

Carlton County logged 25 new cases of COVID-19 in the last week. Those new cases came from just over 1,500 tests, putting this week's testing positivity rate at 1.7%. This is down 0.9% from last week.

New cases in Carlton County ZIP codes April 30-May 6:

  • Cloquet — 15.
  • Esko — 4.
  • Barnum, Carlton — 2 each.
  • Cromwell, Holyoke, Moose Lake — 1 each.

Koochiching County's positive test rate increased from 2.2% positive last week to 9.7% this week. Last week, the county had 11 new cases, and this week there were 41. Itasca County also had a positive test rate above 5%, which is considered to be widespread community transmission. However, Itasca County's positive test rate decreased by 0.8% from last week, reporting 99 new cases compared to last week's 144.

Across the Northland's 10 counties, 1,607 more first doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered as of Thursday's data, and 1,056 people became fully vaccinated. The region's total population is now 47% fully vaccinated, and 51% have received at least one dose of vaccine.

In the Northland's three Wisconsin counties, 406 children between ages 12 and 15 have been vaccinated for COVID-19 since they became eligible last Thursday. This is an increase of 43 from yesterday. The Minnesota Department of Health's website does not yet show vaccinations for this age group, but vaccinations in the "unknown/missing" category increased by 297 from yesterday.
