DENISON, Texas (KXII) -When they’re not out on a call or putting out a fire, the first responders at Denison Fire Rescue can be found training to improve or maintain their skills.

“We do some kind of training every shift,” said Denison Deputy Fire Marshal, Landon Lindsey.

And it doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or a seasoned firefighter, “you keep it up, you keep going through the years as you’re as you’re going here. and we keep doing this training every year,” Lindsey added.

Thursday, they took a creative approach by playing dodgeball, while wearing their self-contained breathing apparatus.

“A lot of firefighters do this,” Lindsey shared, “breathing hard and working around, running around a little bit.”

The objective is to hit the other team’s Captain while protecting your Captain.

They’re doing this in about 70 pounds of gear while trying to preserve air. Lindsey told News 12 that the breathing apparatus can last a firefighter about 30 minutes before running out of air, “it’s not 100% oxygen at all, it’s what we’re breathing right now.”

But this exercise also builds teamwork and brings some friendly competition.

“There’s a lot of aspects that you get to do with this is working with everybody,” Lindsey shared. When the department is called out next, they’ll be ready.
