Moose Jaw firefighters took a field trip to the Kinsmen Sportsplex indoor pool last week, but it wasn’t all fun and games.
The firefighters took to the pool as part of their water rescue training.
The training included a unique piece of water and ice rescue equipment known as the Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC).
“It was donated by the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Club, I believe. So, a big thank you to them. We use it year-round, and we can use it in the summer for moving on the water and it helps us even get around on the ice. We can inflate it in roughly a minute with one of our air tanks that we use for our breathing apparatus,” said firefighter Taylor Enns.
For the firefighters, this training can be a matter of life or death when it comes to real-life scenarios.
They touch on each of their specialties several times a year to keep their skills fresh.
“You don’t always get the chance to go over what you’re about to do right before you do it. So, for us, it’s important that it’s second nature, that we’re not thinking about what we’re doing. When we get the call it’s time to do it. You don’t ever rise to the level of the occasion, you fall back to the level of your training,” said Enns.
