The Oregon Health Authority on Wednesday reported three new COVID-19 deaths and 816 coronavirus cases, the highest daily total in more than two months.
The spike came as Oregon recorded a 6.1% daily test positivity rate, indicating increased spread and the need to test more people to keep up with infections.
Cases have been steadily rising and have more than doubled since March 21, now averaging 583 a day over the past week. Active hospitalizations have also roughly doubled over that span, hitting 200 Wednesday.
Gov. Kate Brown last week announced she would not prohibit indoor dining and drinking in the hardest hit counties unless hospitalizations reach 300 statewide, backing away from earlier benchmarks for closures. Officials have said they’re in a race to get more people vaccinated before more contagious variants spread widely.
Vaccines: Oregon reported 39,326 newly administered doses, which includes 24,097 Tuesday and the remainder from previous days.
Where the new cases are by county: Baker (14), Benton (25), Clackamas (97), Clatsop (2), Columbia (13), Coos (4), Crook (2), Curry (3), Deschutes (84), Douglas (8), Grant (32), Harney (1), Hood River (8), Jackson (50), Jefferson (3), Josephine (19), Klamath (27), Lane (49), Lincoln (6), Linn (23), Malheur (2), Marion (83), Morrow (1), Multnomah (126), Polk (18), Sherman (1), Tillamook (1), Umatilla (9), Union (2), Wasco (8), Washington (86) and Yamhill (9).
Who died: Oregon’s 2,447th COVID-19 death is a 66-year-old Tillamook County woman who tested positive March 17 and died April 13 at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital. She had no underlying medical conditions.
The 2,448th fatality is an 88-year-old Union County woman who tested positive Feb. 22 and died March 15. State officials are confirming where she died. She had underlying conditions.
Oregon’s 2,449th death is a 56-year-old Klamath County man who tested positive March 1 and died April 7 at Sky Lakes Medical Center. He had no underlying conditions.
Hospitalizations: 200 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, up three from Tuesday. That includes 52 people in intensive care, unchanged from Tuesday.
Since it began: Oregon has reported 172,206 confirmed or presumed infections and 2,449 deaths, among the lowest per capita numbers in the nation. To date, the state has reported 2,354,930 vaccine doses administered, fully vaccinating 945,453 people and partially vaccinating 547,205 people.
