Copper Queens goalkeeper Hazel Nali has started her road to recovery following a successful knee surgery.
Zambia High Commissioner in Australia, Dr Elias Munshya revealed that Nali had embarked on a phase of post-surgery rehabilitation and physiotherapy in a statement availed to the ZamFoot Crew.
Nali underwent Surgery in Christchurch, New Zealand on August 16th.
The Copper Queens goalminder suffered an ACL injury prior to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which kept her out of the tournament.
“We would like to provide you with an update on the recent developments concerning Ms. Hazel Nali, the Copper Queens goalkeeper, who recently underwent surgery in Christchurch, New Zealand.
We are pleased to inform you that Ms. Nali’s surgery was a resounding success, and we are grateful for the dedicated team of medical professionals who played a crucial role in her care.
As part of her recovery journey, Ms. Nali is now embarking on a phase of post-surgery rehabilitation and physiotherapy. It is heartening to note that her medical expenses have been fully covered by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our citizens.
Throughout this process, the Zambians In Aotearoa Association Inc. and its Chair Dr. Munanga Mwandila have been instrumental in coordinating and assisting the government to ensure that Ms. Nali receives the best possible care. The solidarity and ubuntu spirit displayed by our Zambian community have been truly commendable, showcasing the unity that defines us as a nation.”
Dr Munshya has confirmed that Nali will remain in New Zealand with a Zambian family for the next two to three weeks as she continues her recovery.
“During the period Ms. Nali has spent in Christchurch, the Copper Queens team manager, Ms. Clementina Mazuba, has been dedicatedly taking care of her together with the Zambian community there. Ms. Mazuba’s exceptional efforts have been instrumental in ensuring Ms. Nali’s comfort and well-being during her recovery journey.
However, as Ms. Mazuba has had to return to Lusaka, the Zambian community has come forward with a heartwarming offer. They have graciously extended their support by offering to care for Ms. Nali during her rehabilitation and physiotherapy process. Over the next 2 to 3 weeks, Ms. Nali will be residing with a Zambian family that has kindly taken on the role of caregivers.
We want to express our deep appreciation to the Zambian community for their selflessness and willingness to stand by one of our own during her time of need. The outpouring of support and assistance reaffirms the strength of our unity as Zambians.

Nali suffered laxity in the Medial Collateral Ligament and a complete tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).
The 2022 WAFCON hero suffered a knee injury prior to the Copper Queens historical 3-2 international friendly win over Germany last month.
