The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is seeking a Staff Scientist, Ph.D., or Postdoctoral Position in Bioinformatics.
We are offering a Staff Scientist, Ph.D., or Postdoctoral position at the Institute of Molecular Oncology and Functional Genomics www.imo.med.tum.de). The Institute is at the new Center for Translational Cancer Research (TranslaTUM), located in the heart of Munich.
Our research is focused on gene discovery, functional gene annotation, and signaling in cancer. We develop and deploy genetic technologies and bioinformatics methods for high-throughput applications, such as genome-scale screening approaches using CRISPR or transposon systems. We are also running a sequencing facility and conduct translational studies using human samples or genetically engineered model organisms. Multidisciplinary teams of cancer biologists, mouse modelers, clinicians, molecular geneticists, sequencing experts, and bioinformaticians are working closely together in a highly creative environment and produce cutting edge cancer research (see for example Nature Protoc. 2017 Feb;12(2):289; Nature. 2018 Feb 1;554(7690):62; Nature Reviews Cancer 2020, Oct;20(10):573; Nature Protoc. 2020 Feb;15(2):266). Ongoing work in collaboration with the Institute of Medical Informatics also includes the development of database infrastructures for the integration of genomic, pharmacologic, and clinical patient data in a combined research/translational setting.
The successful applicant will be part of a Bioinformatics Unit at the Institute. He/she will develop and apply new algorithmic and statistical methods for analyzing, integrating, and visualizing large-scale genomic datasets. Moreover, he/she will be responsible for the maintenance and/or improvement of already existing computational pipelines with algorithms for NGS data processing. He/she will be able to run his/her own projects and/or will also support studies in close interaction with experimental or clinical scientists. For all tasks, the applicant will benefit from extensive expertise available in the unit in handling and integrating large-scale genomic datasets.
Experience and education: Master’s degree in bioinformatics or equivalent expertise in a relevant subject area (e.g. Computational Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Computer Sciences, Physics, or similar).
Programming skills in at least one programming language (R, Python, Perl, Java, etc.); broad knowledge of statistics and state-of-the-art tools for genomic analysis (e.g. BWA, Picard, GATK), experience with statistical software packages (preferably R); basic knowledge in genetics, strong communication skills.
Payment is according to the tariff (TV-L).
