Our community has a unique opportunity at hand to save lives, prevent major illness, and protect not only our friends and neighbors, but our own families. The COVID pandemic which was well-managed just a few weeks ago is now entering into a deadly new phase—an unvaccinated pandemic.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines use what is known as messenger RNA technology
which simply jump-starts our natural immune systems. Basically, the vaccine tells your body to make antibodies to COVID and then the message is discarded. This mRNA technology is not a new method, but rather a well-established and evidence-based method that has been around since 2010 which can teach our immune systems to be on the lookout for this very specific spike protein. The mRNA vaccines have been used and developed against such viruses as Zika and Rabies. The mRNA does not enter your own DNA, and it cannot alter your own DNA, or in any way affect a vaccinated person’s DNA. These and our other COVID vaccines do not affect your fertility. The vaccines that were developed for COVID have been created in the same manner that vaccines have been for years. We all know about Tetanus shots and the success of this vaccine in preventing that devastating disease, and by using vaccination we eliminated Smallpox as a scourge and ongoing human problem from our planet. We can do the same with COVID using vaccines.
The human immune system is ultimately unique to each individual and, no vaccine is 100 percent effective. Many vaccines we all know and trust require boosters, and similar to the flu vaccine, we may require such "boosters" or improvements as new strains of COVID develop. Only time and medical research will tell us if this is so. What we know right now is that the currently available vaccines are safe. These vaccines are also effective against the COVID virus and are still effective in preventing most infections, reducing the severity of illness, and reducing the spread from person to person; all of which could very well save the life of someone you love.
The greatest benefit for our community is in getting enough of the population vaccinated against the virus in order to stop any mutations of the virus which do occur. These mutations make the virus more efficient in spreading the infection and mutations can cause more severe infections. As viruses spread, they commonly shift and evolve. The more "successful" a particular strain of a virus is in spreading, the more likely it will become a dominant and increasingly dangerous strain. This is what we have seen with COVID. Vaccines protect us through their ability to shut down the ability of a virus to spread and shift into something much more dangerous. Personal hygiene, physical distancing, and yes - the wearing of proper masks, also are remarkably effective, but vaccines give each of us the greatest opportunity to live our lives without the negative effects of economic shut downs, masking, and other intrusions into our personal freedoms.
We know there will be a small number of people who get infections even though they are vaccinated. We also have people who contract the flu even though they received a flu vaccine. The fact is far fewer people get sick with vaccines and the surge of COVID now is an unvaccinated pandemic. Those that get sick after vaccination are in almost all cases having much milder symptoms and appear to be less likely to spread the virus to others. This is your opportunity to make a major difference. Vaccines save lives and may just save the life of someone you love.
